José Suárez worked at Bloomingdale from 1999 until his retirement in 2020. He started as a custodial assistant, and then became a custodian. Our Executive Director, José Vellila, remembered him this way: “He was always a kind, respectful, friendly and gentle man. He maintained a smile on his face most of the time and enjoyed laughing and talking with staff. He really enjoyed working at Bloomingdale, and we were very fortunate to have him.”
Our Program Director of Education Marilyn Barnwell shared similar reflections: “I have wonderful memories of Jose’s time at Bloomingdale. One of the things I will remember the most is Jose’s pleasant smile and warm manner. He was very approachable and a valued member of our Bloomingdale team. Jose’s kindness and warmth will always be remembered.”
One 3s teacher recalled how he would be greeted by screams of delight when he came into the classroom toward the end of the day. That was José, usually referred to as ‘Suárez’. He will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies to his family.
