In October, a special visitor started coming to Extended Day to share art with the students. Caroline Blum, a long-time neighborhood resident and visual artist, started with a collection of leaves. The children made their own and decorated them. They continued with the leaf theme the next week, making their own leaves for a large tree. Sponge printing and creating lanterns were the next projects, and after that they made paper bag animal puppets. A group collage mural is underway, with the theme of our neighborhood, filled with cut-outs of buildings, trees, people, and more.
You can see some of Caroline’s work on her website. Caroline has this to say about her time at Bloomingdale, “Sharing my experience as an artist with Extended Day has been fun! I hope the kids enjoy working with different art materials and making projects. I have been inspired by the artist Ruth Asawa, who told me that besides making art, to contribute to the health of my community through my art.” We are very fortunate to have this gifted artist volunteering!
